What do you think DHS could do to prevent deadly child abuse?

Make more effective pop-up visits to assure the childs safety. There are lots of case workers that feel they have so many cases and they’ve been case workers for so many years that they can make one or no visits and say the child is okay. There are so many children that suffer from neglect and abuse that havent been reported because residents feel nothings going to be done. |

Ok, I just stumbled on this subject and having lost custody of my son for wrongly being accused of child abuse, reading the comments are so true and dear to my heart. I have to say, this happened to me 6 yrs ago, I do have custody of my son back but not one person on the state or as I refer to them, the other side, would listen or talk to me or my son. He told them from day one that nothing happened but not one person would listen to us. I lost him for 3 yrs and had to make a pled just to get out of the case. It wasn’t till Dec 17 of last yr that I had a judge in Rankin listen to me and my son and know 1st hand , it was all lies. It doesn’t take the pain away for having been through the ringer or the court system , its a joke in more ways then anyone could understand unless you’ve been there. I just wanted to give my side. I wish there were laws out there for social workers , who maybe over worked but what about the money they get for removing the child and for the parents that really didn’t do what was said of them. Just my side of it though, or my side of hell ! |

all i ever wanted to be was a social worker. i went to college got my BSW and then my masters as you must have that to be a caseworker in MS. i worked for a year at DHS and was so frustrated i finally quit. if i got the chance to pull a child from the parents they would get to go back after the parents complete parenting classes. but most times the law didn’t give me the right to pull a child. |

I don’t think we should jump to conclusions on DHS.You can’t always predict abuse. It’s the same as predicting the next crime time and location. Not every abuse case is true. Some are lies especially when their is a division among the parents. We don’t need more government in the lives of each citizen. You people complain about the crime rate and you don’t want to whip your children.Trust me in 10 years things will be a lot worst.Real abuse should be punished.People who report b.s.should also be punished. |

The whole court system needs help. The Guardian Lien are there for a paycheck, not for the kids. Tell me how can a person get convicted or pleady guilty to child buse and spend time in jail for it. Gives sample prescribtion drugs to their child not given to them by a doctor. Beats them black and blue, and duck tapes them. Get back custody of there child. Most lawyers are out there for the money not the client. Some Guardian Liens don’t even visited houses or both parties, but still want their paycheck. I know that the courts want the kids to be with there mothers but some times thats not the best thing. |

I have joint custody of my children with their father. I had called DHS several times about abuse that my children were telling me about. I was told by DHS that the case had been closed each time due to the fact that they did not “find” anything. I do not want to sound racist but my children are white and because of this I believe they fell through the system. I lived out of state when this took place and eventually stopped calling DHS and started calling the Sheriff’s Department to go and check on my children. Who were much quicker to respond to my children’s needs when I could not physically be there. (I live here now, Thank God) They didn’t mind and my children felt at least safe to know that the police would come if they were in harms way. It also made my ex husband straighten up because he is afraid of the police.(where DHS was involved, the ex had time to coach my children(bribe them and play on their emotions),before DHS arrived. |

It is time for the governor and the district attorney to get involved and do something drastic. Our children are dying at the hands of their own family. Governor Barber and DA step up and fix this problem now! |

It seems to me that DHS should hold job fairs and actively recruit workers. The government only got involved when the reports of abuse and neglect made the news. They too should have a special area where the only interest is making random, regular inspections of DHS and their caseloads. Also, DHS should look into their criteria and requirements when seeking to hire more help. |
