Should News Channel 12 broadcast the most recent pictures and video of the Virginia Tech shooter displaying his guns and his reasoning for the shooting? What do you think?

I don’t think that WJTV should broadcast the pictures of the shooter with his guns and his reasons for the shootings, and I applaud the station’s responsible decision in deciding not to broadcast them. He did this for attention, and other would-be copycats are likely watching. As a parent of a Pearl High School student who was there when Luke Woodham went on his shooting spree, I can say that the inundation of the news media with something as horrific as this to satisfy the morbid curiosity of the public doesn’t help the victims or their families. It only hurts them and feeds the frenzy of other unstable individuals who identify with the shooter. Look what happened at Columbine soon after the Pearl incident. I feel that the media should only give the bare facts - what, where and how many were killed. Don’t give the shooters what they want - the attention they crave, whether they are still alive to revel in it or not. Leave the bereaved families and friends in peace to grieve. We need to give them that consideration and respect. |

It is about time that somebody understands that showing the killers pictures on the news would only glorify him in a morbid way, and that could cause another disturbed person to act out in order to get the 15 min of fame at the cost of innocent people. You should show pict’s of the victims. That would be a great way to honor their lives. thank you for your station and the decision that has been made. I respect the decision channel 12 made not to show the pictures, but I have to admit that as soon as I heard Byron say that, I turned to another channel to see if I could see the pictures. |
