I think that we need to really check the background on we hire to be on our police force. Most people will try to be a police officer for the wrong reason and it is not fair for the ones who really want to help lower the crimes that are really messing up the world order. I think taht we should vote on who needs to be a cop and who doesn’t because the shootings that are being charged by police really needs to stop if we need to keep peace between the people and the police. If these crimes keep going on balance will be lost and order will be no more. I think the only time a police officer should have to use his weapon is when the citizen is not obeying the law and will be understood but for a police officer to shoot and kill a man who isn’t even armed is totally out of the question and should be delt with strict actions. But when it is all said and done I don’t think that the person needed to be shoot. My prayers go out to those who are related to the victom of the uncalled for crime.

my thoughts and prayers go out to the family but i feel the officers should have handled this situation better than they did. My thought on it is that they didnt have to kill him.

I have a problem with the after effects of the situation involving the deputy shooting. Yes it is very tragic the way the ending happen. There problably was and alternative solution to defusing the situation. But we as the public will never know we werent there and we dont deal with the everyday stress as a police officer. What disturbs me is that the black community and Kenneth “Jesse Jackson wanna be” also turns an incident like this into a race matter. Yes I am white but tired of little thing that happens in Jackson that involves opposite race turned into oh the white man shot him cause he is black. That his horsecrap that officer didnt have enough time to think should i kill him cause he is black or let him live cause he is white. I guarantee you that thought never came into his head. So for the black community and Stokes to turn this into racial matters is bull…. so Stokes needs to be removed from his seat and stop holding up Americans of all races from trying to unite together cause there is plenty of asians, hispanics, blacks, and whites that are friends and the ones who still live in the 1885 era in which the werent alive to see what really happen insist on holding that against America (whites).  First of all black slave owners in Africa sold blacks to Americans for money and coming to America as slaves is what led to there freedom oh yeah and who freed black slaves white Americans. So read history before you star blaming whites for racial decisions for everytime a tradegy happens. For thoughts and prayers go out to the family and the victim for what happen but it wasnt RACIAL MOTIVATED!!!!!

If the deputies have been trained in dealing with mentally ill people then there was no excuse for this shooting to be deadly. They knew by the warrant that the person was mentally ill; therefore they should have used their Tasers or wounded the man instead of killing him. This all could have been done before he was even able to get near the deputies to slash them. Also what about the rubber bullets etc. Tax dollars and grant money seems to be wasted on the police. One day they will find themselves with their family member being mentally ill and killed by their fellow officers and then what? Is that what it takes to get police to understand that killing someone is not the only way to diffuse a situation?

As a sheriff deputy you are taught that a person with a knife, within 23ft., can cut you before you can draw your weapon. I will not give a person the chance to prove that point.

I bet there are several thousand people who wish some Muslim guys on a few airplanes back in September 2001 were met with bullets to their box cutters.  Police have families that depend on them, their lives are just as important as anyone else’s.  Why should they risk being slashed (which by the way could easily reult in death) when someone is threatening them.  I feel bad for the guy who was out of control, but had he cut 2 police officers resulting in their deaths would that have been better.

Derek was like a brother to me.  His whole family was my family.  As for the comment about his family making sure that he took his meds, his family lives in Florida.  Also, how often do parents call up their 32 year old child to baby them to take their meds?  Be realistic.  He was a grown man and didn’t need his mom calling every time he had to take his medicine.  That’s just stupid.  As a close family friend, I can admit that the police did have to do something, but not kill him.  My friend saw a bullet hole in his temple.  I believe that that was going just a little bit extreme.  At least if they had shot him in the arm that was holding the box cutter, then we would still have a sweet guy around and his 8 year old son would still have a father.  Derek was very gentle, and he would never hurt anyone.

Unless you have been shot out you can’t begin to know what it’s like to be a police officer attempting to arrest someone. I have been shot at by the folks attempting to break into a business.  I’ve also had a shot gun put to my head.  Neither experience was something I want to repeat.  So I would hate to be a police officer dealing with this on a full time basis.  These folks do this because they want to serve the people of their community.  They should have our support and be given the benefit of the doubt when something like this occurs.  Just keep in mind they are the line between you and the bad guys.
