i knew derek and i was deeply saddened to hear of his murder. it is a completely tragic situation from every angle. i regret that the split second decision was made to shoot him fatally, 4 times, rather than shooting just to stop him from running. he was pronounced dead on the scene, which means they were shooting to kill. i am quite aware what damage a box cutter can do, and i admit that i was not on the scene to witness what all happened that night, but it seems as if there could have been other options… my thoughts go out to derek’s family and to the police officers who shot derek, for i know they will be haunted by their actions that night. |

As a police officer of 32 years, I will say until you are placed in a shoot or don’t shoot situation, do not say what the officer should have done. You may have hours to decide on a situation, we have a split second. If you would like to see what a knife can do to a police officer, I’ll send you some very graphic pictures. |

MY BROTHER IS DEAD. HE WAS SHOT FOUR TIMES. I WANNA KNOW IF THE 911 DISPATCHERS TOLD THE POLICE THAT DEREK HAD MENTAL PROBLEMS LIKE THEY WERE INFORMED. HE WAS NAKED. IT WAS CLEAR THAT THE ONLY “WEAPON” MY BROTHER HAD WAS A BOX CUTTER. HE WASN’T CLOSE ENOUGH TO HARM THEM WHEN HE WAS SHOT. ONE MINUTE THE CHEIF OF POLICE SAYS THE OFFICERS ARE TRAINED TO SHOOT TO KILL AND THE NEXT MINUTE HE SAYS THE OFFICERS ARE THERE TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS PROTECTED. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT THIS TRAINING THAT THE OFFICERS ARE GETTING. IF THEY ARE TRAINED TO SHOOT TO KILL, THEY AREN’T REALLY DOING THEIR JOB TO SERVE AND PROTECT ARE THEY??? I AM AGAINST VIOLENCE. MY BROTHER WOULD NEVER HURT ANYONE OR ANYTHING. HE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HE WAS DOING OR SAYING, JUST LIKE IN THE PAST. I SAY THIS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN THERE MYSELF. |

As the daughter of the late Ben R. Langham, retired state trooper and niece of Billy M. Langham slain state trooper, and an acquaintence of the Johnson family I am outraged that these officers felt so threatened by a box cutter that they had to use deadly force….firing not once, not twice but numerous times. I have a great respect for any and all law enforcement and find it hard to fathom that they are trained to shoot to kill and not trained how to handle someone with a mental problem? Shouldnt there be some type training in place for our trigger happy officers out there? |

This is outragious!! Those officers did not have to kill that man. He was carring a box cutter. They could have shot him in the leg, foot, or even used their tazor gun. Their should be some kind consequence for these officers. I understand a man running at them with a knife, but he was also naked so they should have thought that their may be something wrong with the man and used not such deadly force. |

These officers didnt have time to try to figure out what these people are thinking. When someone has a loaded gun pointed at you or is running at you with a knife the only thing they probably think is its either him or me. This is also not the movies where someone can shoot a gun or knife out of a moving targets hand. So all I’m saying is put yourself in their shoes and think about it. |

It is a sad thing to hear people say that our law enforcement officers look for reasons to spread their authority. Being a relative of one, I have learned much and know that they are there to protect every citizen. They simply have to make a decision in a matter of seconds. A few seconds isn’t enough time to go in a depth investigation on whether the person is ill or not. They were obviously trying to protect themselves and others from being possibly harmed by this individual. No one can really know for sure what they would do unless they were under these circumstances. We just have to remember that these officers are highly trained and take these types of situations in a professional manner. |
