I was not there and do not want to even try and speculate on what went down. However, I heard reports that the victim was a paranoid schizophrenic that was on and off medication. I have a relative that has the same diagnosis and am sorry to say that she does not routinely take her medications either and things such as this can happen. Unfortunately they happen more to people that are innocent victims of their disease and their CHOICE not to take their medications. The person with the diagnosis is seldom the innocent victim. It’s usually a family member, friend or acquaintance of the schizophrenic that gets harmed because they are off their meds and “lose it”. I certainly hate he lost his life, but bad things happen with choices WE make. |

These people commenting on the Flowood Police Officers involved in the the shooting should be ashamed. The first thing a subject lost his life, but far most Police Officers felt like the subject was going to take there life and was a threat, so deadly force was used. Law Enforcement Officers in the City of Flowood do not go around looking for someone to shoot. You have to remember they have families too and they put there lives on the line for a little bit of nothing, and they were there not you. What would you have done if the subject had come running at you with a box cutter in his hand? |

the officers were not protecting the public, they were wanting to show there authority by immediately pulling a gun…i bet none of u knew this man but i did…he was a wonderful person and had his life taken over nothing!!!...the police saw when they got there something was mentally wrong through his strange behavior…derek would never intentionally hurt anyone…i dont understand why, if a gun was necessary, that it wasnt used in a more controlled manner…shooting him dead was not necessary…this just proves how screwed up the police system is…they shoot and kill the people who mean no harm to others and they let the ones go who go around killing others… |

Police Officers have split seconds to make a decision on whether to shoot or not. The way I interpret it the call came in about a man running around naked, officers arrived and seen the person with what was a knife or blade of some sort. Most people are now saying that if the police are not able to subdue someone who is ONLY armed with knife they should’t be police or that if using deadly force is the norm for dealing with SPECIAL suspects. In my opinion next time why don’t you approach someone who is running around with a knife and ask him to stop, better yet, you try to take it away from him. I imagine most of you have never had to approach or deal with someone who is mentally unstable or up on some drug, it’s pretty hard to know the difference since they act just about the same. I for one am not going to do the , if’s, or should’ves I was not there. |

I’m confused about the training our officers receive that does not include training other than shoot them if you are confused. It seems in many situations that there are other body parts that would stop an agressive criminal. |

I think it is awful that the officers shot this man. As a nurse, I have seen many cases where police are not trained to deal with people with mental illness. I believe that if police had to undergo more training for dealing with the mentally ill, there would be many less cases like these seen. |

Lest we forget the Officer and what he has to live with the rest of his life because of the dangerous actions of another, Police Officers are sworn to protect life and property, unfortunately sometimes that means taking a life. God bless all our Police Officers and the split second decisions they have to make!! |

People remember you were not there. These Officers do the job of protecting the public everyday they work. Evidently help was need for someone out of control and armed. I wonder how many if the citizens would be posting these negative comments if it was them who had someone approach them with a weapon and had to call the police. Stop complaining and help police protect the cities we live in. |

that officer should be fired for shooting first before any thing else was tried .there were 2 trained officers and they did not try anything to stop him except shoot 2 on one could at least try.trigger happy bullies with a badge and they will get off caz of that badge good thing he was white or they would have a riot on there hands . |
