COPS SHOULD NOT BE PERMITTED TO KILL CIVILIANS UNLESS THAT CIVILIAN IS CARRYING A FIREARM IN A THREATENING MANNER.

Why is it that the majority, not all,of the time a police officer unjustifiably kills someone, the police department starts lying. I was reading in today’s paper and it stated that the car that was driven by the latest wasn’t stolen, although J.P.D. says it was. All young black males are not inane culprits as many sinistering people would have you to believe.Citizens of Jackson and everywhere, you better stop being apathetic about these type crimes

Don’t the police have non-lethal tasar guns that they could have used instead of lethal force?

After hearing about this case I was very suprised at the actions of the police force.  I have managed a police force and our training was to meet the threat with the appropriate force. Box Cutter vs. Gun I think the police department needs to re-think their response and when to use lethal force.  I would think they have had enough training to mitigate the threat of a box cutter without taking a life.

I knew Derek and knew he had problems but still that was no reason to kill him.  It could have been handled better.  He could have been shot in the leg and then tazed.  Now there is young boy without a father and a family without a brother or son.

Clearly there is a breakdown in communication. The folks that called 911 knew this man had a mental illness so either the dispatcher did not pass along that important information, the officers did not listen or they were not adequately trained to handle this type of situation.

It seems the police officers act in extremes with cases where people are KNOWN to have a mental illness—they over-react or under-react.

My heart goes out to the family and friends.

As a JPD Officer one of the things I was taught in the academy was that there is a possibility that I would either be killed in the line of duty or have to take the life of another. However, I was never taught that every action I took weather in a split second or a planned event would I be scrutinized by the public whom I swore to protect. No officer ever wants to take a life, ever. But that is a chance that we take when we go to work daily. Citizens have no idea what happens to an officer after he is involved in a shooting, mentally , emotionally, financially, physically. Trauma that stays with that officer forever. What about those officers whom have been forgotten protecting you. Brian Kenzie, Katchings, Simmons, Washington, Skinner and Buckley. Wonder if the thought crossed their mind about what you thought when they drew their last breath. I hear daily from citizens, ” I wouldn’t do your job for a million dollars,” and I think to myself, no but you sure will tell me how to do it for free. Support YOUR police by obeying the law and let them do their job or lobby your congressman to abolish police altogether and do it yourself.

As one who lives in Flowood, I am very thankful for the Flowood PD.  They help keep Flowood from becoming Jackson East.  Has anyone given any thought to the fact that there is an elementary school and park directly across the street from where this man lived?  I am just glad that his failure to take his medication happened at night and not when school was in or when kids were in the park.  The last thing we need is some guy off his meds, naked, and in the park or school with a boxcutter.  I am very sorry for his family and the officer that now has to deal with this, but why was this guys family not checking on their son, brother, etc. to make sure he took his medication.  Their failure to do so contributed to this.

I am a mental patient and I belive that during one of my episodes I would pay attention if I were shoy in the foot or leg, I do not think I should be killed.
