Truancy can be addressed through the law enforcement agencies, dept of health and dept of social services.

If your child is continuously late or absent from school, the police, DA, food stamp, wic, medicaid, health unit, as well as child welfare need to notified.

Parent teacher conferences need to be mandatory and enforced by local and state governments.

Children need to be tested prior to entering kindergarten and if basics like recognizing alphabets, colors, numbers 0 to 10, recognizing his or her own name and birthday, and other basic things that kids should know when they are 5 years old, parents should be held accountable… punishable by fines, jail time or both.

After a certain number of incomplete/“blank” homework assignments returned to school, the DA should also be notified.

Children learn more in the first 5 years of life than they ever will at any point in their lives. The children of today are not able to be properly disciplined at home or at school so many parents have just stopped trying and the kids are being handicapped and branded for the rest of their lives.

We all know that teenagers are not built like they used to be, in my opinion, due to the hormones, additives, and preservatives in our food. They act older, dress too maturely, and have too much freedom. Many young ladies pass themselves off as much older (even at 14 and 15) as 19 and 20 years old. They do adult things and get themselves into adult situations and after that? Men getr prosecuted for statuatory rape or taxpayers have to pay to feed, clothe, and care for more children. The STD rate is so high, why? Children today can do what they want!

Teens also need to be held accountable for their own actions.

IF GRADES ARE NOT UP TO PAR, WHY DO SO MANY KIDS HAVE EXPENSIVE CLOTHING, *CELL PHONES*, IPODS AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES? YOU CAN’T CLEAN YOUR ROOM AND BE RESPECTFUL TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS YET YOU ARE ***ENTITLED*** TO SOMETHING? AND SOON AS THAT STUFF BREAKS, THE PARENTS GO OUT AND UPGRADE THAT?

YOU ARE NOT HELPING YOUR CHILD. YOU ARE SETTING YOUR CHILDREN UP FOR DISASTER AND WE WORKING AMERICANS ARE PAYING FOR IT. THAT IS WHY WE ARE LOSING STATUS IN THE WORLD AND SO FAR IN DEBT. WE HAVE OUR PRIORITIES MIXED UP!!!

I could go on and on all day.

Truancy is not only a problem in Jackson, everywhere esle to, even in this little town where I live.  I totally disagree with two of the comments that I have read.  Training begins at home, church, community and school.  We let the legislative set the tone for our children by saying that corpal punishment and prayer shouldn’t be in the schools.

When the parents tell the Prin. or teachers not to whip/paddle their child then what is it for the school to do but send them back home to their parents who doesn’t want them at home with them anyway and don’t want anyone to discipline at schools.

Its not all of the working parents who say don’t discipline my child, it is these Welfare recipient who sat at home all day drinking, smoking, fighting, playing cards and entertaining their friends(personal or associates)and saying they can’t do anything with their child(but don’t want you to do anything with them either).  I guess not when you are saying and doing everything in front of them.  What do you expect.  In our school we have a no paddling list.

It is ashame that the children of today doesn’t value education like the olden days.  They have the world at their finger tip and letting it all go down the drain because they think selling dope, sagging stealing, killing and standing on the corner is the only way to go and think that is the way of life and most of their parents don’t even know where they are and what they are doing. Some of them are just waiting for them to bring the money home or the stolen goods so they want have to get out and work it.

It is the working people who is keeping up their medicaid, food in their mouth and clothes on their backs and we can’t hardly go to the doctor because the insurance want pay for this or that or the office visit and medicine is to high. We have to be careful what we buy at the store because of the high prices and here you got the Welfare Recipeint with two or three buggies of cold cuts, potatoe chips, candy, etc.  and paying for it with the EBT card and our tax money. And most of them is living better then the working folks.

We as a parents and community need to wake up and smell the coffee.  Most of the teachers are coming out because of the abuse from children who don’t want to be at school, but is being made to come and because they don’t want to be there then they act a fool so they can get thrown out of school.

Dr. King, God bless his soul I know he has tilted the soil to and fro because we are going backwards.

Back in the days we didn’t have computers, HDTV, cell phones(you 2nd graders walking around with cell phones. We were bless to even have a phone and tv) and barely had a typewriter but yet we turned out doctors, teacher, preachers, Sen, Rep., ceo’s, etc. but now we are praying that our child/children and grand child/children will stay focus and live up to the moral values, and the importance of an education that is being taught to them

So, quit putting all the blame on the schools just look around your community and see what that child parent is doing on a daily bases and start getting on the parents. Build a school for all of the 15 - 20 year old that is setting up in the 7th and 8th grade.  Get them from our little babies because they are ruining them.

Yes, I am from the old school where I got my butt tore up, where my parents value an education and most of all respect to the elderly and to people in general. Its nothing wrong with saying yes, madame and yes, sir.  What did Aretha Franklin say “R E S P E C T” everyone due respect whether you like them or not.  Quit trying to buy your childchildren love, love him for who he/she is and just because he is yours. We survived with a little of nothing and I know they can do.  Yes, I know we want them to have thing that we didn’t have but don’t get all stressed out because you can’t do it, don’t let them pressure you into doing things that you can’t afford just because the Jone’s can.  Lets teach our children better at home.  Even tho they sometime still stray away but atleast you can rest knowing that you taught them the right way.

I think that trying to stop truancy is a good move by the mayor. It’s not the superintendent’s fault, it’s the schools administrative staffs. Students are getting suspended for stupid things and that’s why they are out of school. Changing the Superintendent in the middle of the school year is a bad idea.

Truancy is a really big problem that plagues the capital city. I havent agreed with much of what Mayor Melton has done in the past, but I stand behind him 100% on this one. I applaud the mayor for doing something that the parents are failing to do. Without education, the students will not become
productive citizens, and in turn will become statistics… Something dramatic needs to be done. If the parents can get these students in school, i’m almost positive that the crime rate will decrease. The murderers, robbers, and trespassers are becoming younger and younger. There are some parents who choose to say that they cant work and make sure that their children are in school. Thats a lie. Both of my parents worked and I was in school everyday that I wasnt sick. If the parents cant control their children then they need to stop having them.

I just want to say as a mother of a 9th grader at Lanier I looked on as
the mayor took a child back to that school and laugh. If
the child wants to be out of school just go and act up a little they will send you home and you can miss all of the day you want to.
Here is why I say that my son on Monday got into an almost fight or fight whichever it depend on who you talk to.
he was sent home for 9 days. I’m not saying he should not get some kind of punishment but do you think sending a
child home really hurt him/her I do not think so. Mayor Melton you need to looking into this as well. We working parents need all of the help we can get
with our children I know me and my husband try our best we talk to our son and try to show him right from wrong.
I have already lost two of my son to the streets and guess where the trouble start right at Lanier school. I want help for my son I want him to be
all he can be and that start with a good education. B

Yes we do need to worry about “Truancy,” but we need to also worry about our teacher’s leaving because of the behavior inside of the JPS District. We have no help with these children whom are disobedient, rude, defiant, and disrespectful. We need some type of corporal punishment back into the system. GO FRANK!

Frank sit down, please. I am a teacher and if you take care of crime and let Dr. Watkins take care of JPS things may be a little bit better. We should be concerned about the welfare of the students, teachers, faculty, and staff. There is too much sexual harrassment in the schools right now. I think this is one of the problems why some students don’t want to come to school and the teahers want to leave. Some don’t feel safe there. So again, Frank sit down!!!!And JPS handle your business, thats why Mississippi schools are always at the bottom. We are worried about the wrong things!

I just want to say that all of this began when the saints of God stood by and let the woman get people together and took prayer out of school, and that allowed satan to come on in and attack our children, even some of the teachers. Jacckson and all over the world has a serious problem, and until they go back to the old time way of whipping the children, and not allowing all of the things that they have to have.  satan is getting the children via the music that they listen to, the games they are playing, and they are not getting structure at the homes, and it is just getting out children in trouble.  We need to go back to the old time way, when a villiage raised a child.  They tell the parents not to whip their children, the teachers can’t whip them, so where is it going to come from.  Let whoever do their job as long as they are doing it right.  God Bless!

Jackson Public school is not doing all they can.  Truancy officers do very little work. You see kids walking the street daily.  Most of your crime is being committed by teens.  Some parents don’t even know their children have not been to school.
