I’ve read comments on this site and I’m impressed. Specifically, I agree with those who hold the view that Dale Danks, Jr. is STILL the major of Jackson. Melton is just a front. Did anyone notice how chummy Danks and McMillin were during the press conference announcing McMillin as Chief Sheriff? What was Danks’ role there? Who invited him to the party. . .? His client, flunky Melton, of course.
The mayor is a tyrant he thinks he can do whatever he wants to do. Mcmillin ain’t no kind of hero because if he was things wouldn’t be like they are now. How can he run both this ain’t no little job this is a great task for anyone The sheriff is responsible for the county not the city. He won’t make a big contribution to stopping crime because his work load will be to big so he won’t really be running the show after all.
I am from Jackson and stay on top of what is going on in my hometown but when my mother called me to tell me about this I was very concerned. I have met McMillin on a few occasions and he seems to be a good guy and his background is what many would call exceptional. I have no doubt that he will make an excellent Police Chief. My concern is that for the five terms that he has served as Hinds County Sheriff, he has been paid well for doing a job that we were all under the impression was a full time job. The fact that he would even consider taking on the job of Police Chief leaves me wondering if he has been underworked and overpaid for all these years. Now at an age where many people consider retiring, Sheriff McMillin is taking a second “full time job”. I wonder if anyone else is concerned about the fact that the mayor cannot find anyone else out of the over 300 million people in the country, that he feels can dedicate all of their energy to the city of Jackson. My opinion is this: if Frank Melton and Malcolm McMillin think that one man can handle the two jobs then fine, but why dont we log the hours that he spends doing each job and pay the “Chief Sheriff” accordingly.
Dale Danks has been running the city since the beginning. Melton stepped out of line and needed an Warden-hence McMillin. This is only a small implementation of the plans in store. Ben Allen removed himself from the comical city council in order to be in place for the next mayoral election. The black community kept complaining about a caucasion run, majority black city. Johnson was saying yes, to the wrong people so he had to go. Melton has been the extreme, thereby begging for anything other than this clown. The plan is to present a mayor that the black community will be happy with, not realizing that this is the same strategies used in slavery times. McMillin is biased towards the county as evidenced by the high profile Norman case. Jackson Detention Officer escorted batman and other murders without the assistance of the county but for the camera the Sheriff had his boys spend additional tax dollars to transport this prisoner alone. He needs to be one of the other but not both.
I firmly believe that McMillin would be great for the city of Jackson. McMillin would straighten up the JPD. the council won’t approve because they will actully have to do work and skeletons will out.
Melton needs to make up mind about police chief.
I think this was the best choice the Mayor has ever made. Now, if the people of Jackson would only elect someone to be the “best” Mayor next election this city just might improve.
I don’t think mayor Melton’s choice was too great. Mr.M. at his age shouldn’t be working on big time crimes. So, he should choose a way more younger cheif.
I think Mr. McMillin Strikes fear in the many criminals preying on the good honest working citizens of Jackson and for good reasons!
I think that McMillan should stay where he is at
A mayor with an alleged questionable history of relationships with the criminal element of the city has chosen a Sheriff as Chief of Police that has an alleged questionable practice of releasing criminals once arrested. Why would anyone be concerned about this selection? Could it be that this is just another move to solidify the organized crime that has existed since (at least) the Dale Danks era as Mayor? Hmmm
Its about time a true law enforcement officer was named chief. Now the JPD can be cleansed of the corrupt and lazy officers. And with Faye Petterson gone soon too, criminals will be removed from the streets of Jackson as well.
This is the best thing that has happened to Jackson in a long time. We moved our family out of Jackson because of the crime. Sheriff McMillin is a great person to lead the police department, and I feel that he will clean Jackson up. It’s about time!
If anyone can pull this off, McMillan can do it. My question is can he keep the 2 jobs separate and not have a conflict of interest when it comes to the protection of the people of Jackson and the people of Hinds County. I realize the City of Jackson probably has a larger more pressing crime problem than the County at this time. However, I would not want to see the County suffer as a result of more focus going to the City. I would be totally opposed to the mingling of the Sheriff’s Dept personnel and the City of Jackson personnel. They are 2 separate entities and should remain so.
I think Lee Vance should be promoted to Assistant Chief Sheriff for the City of Jackson.
There are so many very qualified deputies I couldn’t begin to make a suggestion for Assitant Chief Sheriff for Hinds County.
How long will the people of Jackson continue to let Frank Melton run their local government in the best interest of Frank Melton? He seems content to use his position only to promote his friends and not the city in which he governs. It’s embarrassing.
